Gym Walls Are Up at Yaquina View!

Exterior walls for a new gymnasium were tilted up over the weekend at Yaquina View Elementary School in Newport. Once completed, the new gym will provide more than 6,000 square feet of space for the students, staff and community.

Principal Kristin Becker said it was thrilling to watch the walls go up. “It was exciting when we could see they were pouring the concrete for the walls, but to actually see the walls up, it finally sunk in that this is actually going to happen,” Becker said. “It was a big step forward.”

Yaquina View Elementary was originally built in 1960 without a gymnasium. Students use the cafetorium for indoor physical education and utilize the gym spaces at Newport High School and Sam Case for music performances .

The Lincoln County School District received $3 million in federal relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to build the gym. Contingency funding for this project will come from the district’s Construction Excise Tax revenues.

LCSD Director of Facilities & Maintenance Rich Belloni said the estimated project completion date is April 1, 2023.
