ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: SKYLY POSTMA (Class of 2022)

Posted on April 11, 2025

In this Alumni Spotlight, we feature recent Waldport High School graduate Skyly Postma, who has pursued a path in cosmetology while challenging common misconceptions about trade schools.

Finding Direction

Like many high school students, Skyly wasn’t certain about her post-graduation plans until her senior year. It was then that she discovered her interest in beauty school and began taking decisive steps toward that goal. “I prepared by submitting an application for the school, asked my peers and teachers to write me letters of recommendation, and applied for many scholarships,” Skyly shared.

Education After Waldport

After graduating from Waldport High School in 2022, Skyly continued her education at Phagans Beauty College. There, she earned certifications in multiple specialties:

  • Nail Technology
  • Hair Styling
  • Esthetics

Current Path

Today, Skyly works as a caregiver at a memory care facility while simultaneously studying for her state board exams. Once she passes these exams, she’ll become a licensed cosmetologist, bringing together all her areas of training.

Advice for Current Students

Skyly emphasizes the importance of connection and participation for high school students. “Make connections and participate. Without the support of my friends and family, I wouldn’t have made it through high school or trade school.”

She also challenges perceptions about vocational education. “There’s such a stigma around trade schools, and honestly, going to trade school was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It’s not easy, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel that leads to an amazing reward if you apply yourself hard enough.”
