The Oregon Small Schools Association (OSSA) has named Patrick Clarke as its 2025 Teacher of the Year. Clarke serves in the Siletz Valley Charter School, located in the tribal community of Siletz in Lincoln County, Oregon.
Clarke has transformed his experience as an army cook into a comprehensive culinary program that teaches students to grow, harvest, prepare and serve a variety of foods while celebrating cultural traditions.
“Patrick Clarke has taken his experiences as an army cook and turned them into a culinary school and food programs that build students’ appreciation for food as a cultural gift,” said Ginger Redlinger, Superintendent/Principal of Siletz Valley Schools. “Patrick has a vision that addresses the needs of everyone from children to elders, understanding that good food brings families together.”
Redlinger emphasized the unique cultural aspects of Clarke’s work. “From a simple food service kitchen, he has built a program that teaches students how to grow, harvest, prepare, and serve a variety of foods. In our tribal community of Siletz, he has earned the respect of tribal members to participate in ceremonial meals and has been honored to share his knowledge about preparing food for ceremonies.”
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award,” said Clarke. “I find myself surrounded by dedicated professional teachers, staff and amazing students who do amazing work every day and encourage me to do the same.”
According to Redlinger, Clarke has “helped students understand different cultural approaches to food and its history — not just the act of gathering, but the practice of preparing and eating together. Patrick has ensured that all students appreciate our local culture and traditions. He understands the value of school, of community, of caring for children, of caring for our natural resources, and loving each other. I can’t think of anyone more worthy of the Oregon Small Schools Teacher of the Year.”
OSSA’s Teacher of the Year award recognizes educators who demonstrate integrity, leadership, commitment to community, scholarship and student achievement. Clarke will receive his award at the OSSA Spring Conference on April 18, 2025, at the Salishan Resort. Congratulations on this well deserving award!
