On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, the Siletz Valley School drummers, known as ‘No Tell Ridge’, brought joy to the students and staff at Yaquina View Elementary School (YVeS) with their performance of traditional powwow and round dance songs.
During this special assembly, the students also presented a flag to the student body generously provided to the school by the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians. The flag will be hung in the cafeteria after an upcoming mini powwow.
‘No Tell Ridge’ is a group comprising 15 youth and one adult, Ron Butler. Together, they perform a repertoire that includes flag songs, veterans songs, intertribal songs, honor songs, and hand drum songs. Their performances extend throughout Lincoln County and beyond.
Kent Rilatos, who wholeheartedly supports the group, highlighted the busy schedule of ‘No Tell Ridge.’ “We have had the privilege of drumming at various Lincoln County schools, the Nesika Illahee pow-wow, round dances for Title IV, community events, the Elders program, Tribal Clinic, and even at home volleyball and football games,” Rilatos said. “Our upcoming performances include the Siletz Mini powwow, Siletz Tribe Restoration powwow, and the Siletz School Veterans assembly.” Additionally, these talented drummers are scheduled to perform at the Oregon School Board Association’s annual convention in Portland on November 11.
The drum class convenes for practice four days a week in a classroom setting, made possible through partnerships with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, the Lincoln County School District Title IV, and members of the Siletz community. This group was established to preserve and pass on the rich traditions of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, fostering learning and knowledge among the youth.
Kent Rilatos expressed his deep satisfaction. “I love to see our youth, both Tribal and non-Tribal members, learning protocol, drumming technique, and history,” he said. “We, here at Siletz, take immense pride in our students and their willingness to share their knowledge with various organizations and people.”
