Superintendent Statement to the Staff and Community

Dear Lincoln County School District Staff, Board, and Community,
First of all, I wish everyone a very happy, healthy 2022.
The Omicron Variant of COVID has hit Lincoln County. I watch the numbers each and every day and I have watched them increase. The numbers of staff and students home due to COVID have sharply increased. Even with the boosters (which are a GREAT idea) and with new quarantine timelines and “test to stay”, our numbers of students in quarantine have risen. Our ability to provide consistent, high-quality instruction is teetering on the brink. We have watched as districts across Oregon have closed their doors for several days or weeks at a time due to unfilled classrooms (meaning there are no substitutes) and low percentages of students in attendance. Some are going to Comprehensive Distance Learning from home again or using the ½ in school ½ out of school Hybrid model we used last year.
Why am I writing to you all today?
Because I am worried. I would like everyone to think about having a plan for added daycare in case we have to temporarily go back to another model of instruction until the Omicron surge goes away and we can get and keep teachers in our classrooms. We have kept our athletics programs alive but just barely. So many teams have had to cancel due to COVID exposures-ours and other school districts. Our bus drivers are trying their best to meet the district’s needs and we are using other appropriate personnel to drive vans to sporting events. We may be asking parents to transport.
I am writing to you all so if something does need to happen, you had a little bit of a warning from the school district. I am not saying it will but it might. It might happen to one area of the district and not another. I don’t know yet but the numbers are increasing and our ability to adjust to it is failing.
What can you do to keep our kids in school?
- Get your Vaccinations including the much-needed Booster.
- Wear your mask!
- Stay some distance apart from others, especially those not in your household.
- Cease showing up to gatherings of larger amounts of people, especially indoors.
- WASH your hands.
- If you feel sick, stay home. If your kids feel sick, keep them home.

La variante Omicron de COVID ha llegado al condado Lincoln. Observo los números todos los días y los he visto subir. La cantidad de personal y estudiantes en casa debido a COVID ha aumentado considerablemente. Incluso con la vacuna de refuerzos (que son una BUENA idea) y con nuevos plazos de cuarentena y ” Test to Stay/prueba para quedarse”, nuestro número de estudiantes en cuarentena ha aumentado. Nuestra capacidad para brindar instrucción constante y de alta calidad está al borde de caerse. Hemos visto cómo otros distritos de Oregón han cerrado sus puertas durante varios días o semanas a la vez debido a las aulas vacías sin personal (lo que significa que no hay sustitutos) y los bajos porcentajes de asistencia de los estudiantes. Algunos están volviendo al aprendizaje integral a distancia desde casa o usando el modelo híbrido la mitad del tiempo que usamos el año pasado y la escuela la otra mitad del tiempo.
¿Por qué les escribo a todos ustedes hoy?
Porque estoy preocupada. Me gustaría que todos pensaran en tener un plan para cuidado de niños en caso de que tengamos que volver temporalmente a otro modelo de instrucción hasta que desaparezca el aumento de casos de Omicron y podamos tener y mantener maestros en nuestras aulas. Hemos mantenido vivos nuestros programas de atletismo, pero apenas. Muchos equipos han tenido que cancelar debido a la expuesto a COVID, el nuestro y otros distritos escolares. Nuestros conductores de autobuses están haciendo todo lo posible para satisfacer las necesidades del distrito y estamos utilizando otro personal apropiado para conducir camionetas a eventos deportivos. Es posible que les estemos pidiendo a los padres que transporten a sus estudinates.
Les escribo a todos, por si algo si sucede y tengan una pequeña advertencia del distrito escolar. No digo que lo haga, pero podría ser. Puede suceder en unas de las áreas del distrito. Todavía no lo sé, pero los números están aumentando y nuestra capacidad para adaptarnos está fallando.
¿Qué puedes hacer para mantener a nuestros hijos en la escuela?
- Obtenga sus vacunas, incluido la de refuerzo que tanto necesita.
- Use cubre bocas
- Manténgase a cierta distancia de los demás, especialmente de aquellos que no están en su hogar.
- Deje de asistir a reuniones de grandes cantidades de personas, especialmente en interiores.
- Lave sus manos.
- Si se siente enfermo, quédese en casa. Si sus hijos se sienten enfermos, manténgalos en casa.
