Music in Our Schools 

Yes, students are playing music over Zoom and in our schools. Here is a Districtwide update from our music teachers. 

Newport High School and Newport Middle School

Rachel Steward, Music Teacher:

We currently have eight 6th graders back for hybrid and three high school students attending class as part of Limited in-person Instruction. It has been fulfilling to have students in class and making music after 11 months of silent classrooms. 

The 6th graders are beginners this year who have had to learn the basics about their instrument through online lessons. This means that I haven’t seen them or hear them most of the time, beyond recorded assignment videos. They have done an excellent job of following along and learning online, and so now that we can play together in person, their learning is going to take off. With such small groups in the classroom, each student can get more individual attention and support on their instruments!

The high school students attending in person are all returning students from my top-level auditioned Symphonic Band last year. Lorelei Bretz, a senior who plays flute, and the other two are sophomores: Layne Phillips, who plays alto saxophone, and Daniel Stock, who plays percussion. We focus on individual musicianship skills and music theory and history, hoping that we will have strong solo players with a full foundational knowledge of music when we can return to the band as we know it. The high school bands have been working on solos and duets, as well as original compositions. We are also working on compiling recordings that I can blend into a virtual ensemble. Due to technical constraints, the students never get to hear each other and play together simultaneously. 

 

Sam Case and Yaquina View Elementary (Newport)

Sheena Moore, Music Teacher

I have collaborated with a friend who is Native Hawai’ian to teach the students at Yaquina View about hula, pu’ili, and Hawai’ian culture in an authentic, respectful way. I hope to make a recording for parents and guardians to enjoy. 

The third graders at Sam Case will be embarking on a musical journey outside of school hours. After each class, a new music challenge will be posted to my SeeSaw classroom, including reading on the music staff, playing the recorder, and retelling that week’s music article. The next time we meet as a class, the previous week’s challenge will be discussed. Students have the opportunity to share what they discovered, see which areas need improvement, and how to improve for the next challenge. Each cohort will have the chance to win prizes or even a popcorn and movie day based on their participation and accuracy.

The fourth and fifth graders have been exploring the physics of sound. We have looked at different instrument families, learned how they make sounds and what makes the pitch higher or lower. They just completed an experiment with a cup and rubber band where they learned how to tune a string instrument. 

I am delivering my lessons at Yaquina View by teaching students in person, in their homeroom. I am providing lessons at Sam Case through zoom.

 

Toledo Jr./Sr. High School 

Elizabeth Soper, Music Teacher: 

Toledo is in an excellent place for music this year! We are bringing back choir after a year hiatus and band after a several-year hiatus. The kids love these classes so far. Our music enrollment has more than doubled since the beginning of the year!

We are currently doing a fundraiser for two tubas. They cost about $15,000 new! We are only $3,000 away from our goal, and I hope to reach it here in the next few months. There was an article written about our fundraiser in the Oregon Arts Watch, which you can find here.

 

Toledo Elementary

Sarah Gibbs, Music Teacher 

 

At this point in the year, I am teaching half of the day virtually through Zoom (where homeroom teachers are presenting their Zoom screens) and am teaching half of the day in person (pushing in). 

My students have shown tremendous growth this year, starting the year learning about beginning rhythmic elements like ta, ti-ti, and the half note (ta-a). Students have also kept a steady beat and continued to understand the difference between beat and rhythm. Creating homemade instruments and learning about Graphic Scores were other opportunities students had to share their creativity during the early part of the year. For not having music last year, I have seen them grow in leaps and bounds!

Currently, my 4th-6th graders are being introduced to the staff, learning how to read sheet music on either the Glockenspiel or Lap Harp, and applying their previous knowledge of ta, ti-ti, and the half note. Students have done an excellent job following all COVID procedures during our instrument time and keeping to our class expectations of Caring for others, Learning from your mistakes, Every day doing your best, and Finding potential in not only others…but yourself (CLEF). 

My kinder-3rd graders have also had the chance to play either the rhythm sticks (kinder) or the Glockenspiel (1st-3rd). These students have had opportunities to explore their instrument, figuring out where their highest and lowest notes are and how to make the sounds of different characters that they include in student-created stories. We have had all sorts of characters enter our stories, including dragons, dancing crabs, a Superman pig, and even Miss Gibbs! 

Throughout the rest of the year, students will continually apply what they have learned so far and use it to create their music compositions and learn additional notes and instruments. 6th graders will also have the chance to hear from Elizabeth Soper at Toledo Jr./Sr. and learn about opportunities that they will have if they choose to make music next year. 

 

Taft 7-12

Collin Stegner, Music Teacher 

The middle school band is coming back to Taft! The middle school band will start tomorrow, and we are prepped and ready to start making music again.

The jazz band will be coming back in-person one day a week, starting in 2 weeks. 

All of the other ensembles and classes are learning virtually and prepping for another virtual showcase of their determination and perseverance to make music happen during virtual learning! 

We also purchased a new application called SoundTrap. This application allows students to record, produce, and create music all on their own. It has been an excellent addition to allowing kids to make music individually and as a group. 

 

Taft Elementary 

Karin Teisl, Music Teacher

At Taft Elementary, we are in hybrid, so I see 3rd-6th Graders in person and online (depending on the day)

Some of the things we are working on:

4. 6th Grade Band and Choir- we are learning our Band instruments online!

Oceanlake Elementary

Gwendolyn Lahti, Music Teacher

Currently, the students are receiving two expertly created music lessons per week designed by Ms. Lahti herself. They are designed so the children can do them on their own with audio directions embedded into every slide. Classes include videos, stories, and lots of beat and rhythm practice. These lessons teach basic music concepts such as beat, rhythm, high and low (pitch), and slow and fast (tempo). Every lesson has questions embedded in them, and children can demonstrate their learning through multiple choice questions, quick writes, and drawing. 

Waldport Middle and High School 

Tim Chase, Music Teacher 

I am continuing the class as a club time two days a week in extra meeting times. I’m hoping we’ll be able to kick start the middle school program again next school year! We plan to record and release a video of students playing a concert at home. We’re planning to perform the third movement of the English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

Crestview Heights Elementary School

Michael Baker, Music Teacher 

The long-range goal is to give the students the ability to understand and move

freely around the multiple dimensions of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, expression, and instrumentation. Young children experience music with their whole being, and they use music with delight. Here then are some of the nuts and bolts to tap that excitement and delight. In my daily schedule for the push-in classes, I use rhythm games to teach rhythm, multicolored scarves to teach musical form, xylophones to teach melodic structure and expressive elements, and the younger students make some rhythm instruments. I  have introduced some of the great ballets and Classic incidental music (Nutcracker Suite, Peer Gynt, Peter, and the Wolf). This summary lists only a few of the experiences used to build the children’s confidence in their own music-making power.

Newport High School y Newport Middle School

 

La Maestra de Música, Rachel Steward:

Actualmente tenemos ocho estudiantes del sexto grado en el programa híbrido y tres estudiantes de preparatoria asistiendo a clases como parte del programa de Limited in-person Instruction (Instrucción Limitada en-persona). Después de 11 meses de salones silenciosos de clases, ha sido muy satisfactorio tenerlos en clases y hacer música. 

Los estudiantes de sexto grado son principiantes este año, quienes han tenido que aprender lo básico a través de lecciones en línea acerca de sus instrumentos. A parte de los videos grabados como tareas asignadas, esto significa que no los he podido ver o escuchar la mayor parte del tiempo. Ellos han hecho un excelente trabajo en cómo seguir el aprendizaje en línea y ahora que podemos tocar juntos en persona, su aprendizaje aumenta muy rápido. ¡Siendo ahora los grupos de clases más pequeños, cada estudiante puede obtener apoyo y una atención individualizada de sus instrumentos!

Los estudiantes de preparatoria, que están asistiendo a clases de regreso, son los estudiantes de mi alto-nivel de la Banda Sinfónica del año pasado. Lorelei Bretz, un senior/estudiante del último grado, quien toca la flauta y los otros 2 son estudiantes high school: Layne Phillips, quien toca el saxofón y Daniel Stock, quien toca percusión. Nos enfocamos en habilidades musicales individuales y teoría e historia de música, con la esperanza de tener solistas bien preparados con un completo conocimiento fundamental de música cuando regresemos a formar nuestra banda musical de siempre. La banda de la escuela ha estado trabajando como solistas y dúos, así como también están componiendo sus temas originales. Estamos también trabajando en recopilar grabaciones que se puedan mezclar en conjunto virtual. Debido a restricciones técnicas los estudiantes nunca pueden escucharse entre sí y tocar juntos simultáneamente.

Sam Case y Yaquina View Elementary (Newport)

 

La Maestra de Música, Sheena Moore:

 

He colaborado con un amigo Nativo de Hawaii para que enseñe a los estudiantes de Yaquina View acerca del hula, pu’ili y la cultura de Hawaii en una manera respetuosa y auténtica. Espero hacer una grabación que les agrade a los padres y tutores.

 

Los estudiantes de tercer grado de la escuela Sam Case van a embarcarse en un viaje musical después de los horarios escolares. Después de cada clase un nuevo desafío musical será puesto en mi boletín de clase SeeSaw, incluyendo lectura músical del personal, tocando la grabadora y re-contando el artículo de música de la semana. Cuando nos reunimos en clases la siguiente semana, el desafío de la semana previa será el tópico de la clase. Así, los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de compartir lo que han descubierto, ver en qué áreas necesitan ayuda y cómo mejorar para el próximo desafío. Cada grupo tendrá la oportunidad de ganar premios basado en su participación y precisión y ganar la oportunidad de ver una película un día acompañados de palomitas de maíz.

 

Los estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado han estado explorando las propiedades físicas de la música. Hemos visto diferentes clases de instrumentos musicales, aprendiendo cómo hacer sonidos y cómo hacer los tonos altos o bajos. Acabamos de terminar un experimento con un vaso y una liga de hule donde ellos aprendieron cómo entonar un instrumento de cuerda.

 

Estoy dando mis lecciones a los estudiantes de Yaquina View en persona y en sus hogares. También estoy proveyendo lecciones para los estudiantes de Sam Case via Zoom.

 

Toledo Jr./Sr. High School

!Toledo es un excelente lugar para la música este año! Hemos traído el coro después de un año muy difícil y la banda de música después de varios años muy arduos. Hasta ahora los niños aman estas clases. El número de nuestros estudiantes inscritos se ha duplicado desde el principio del año. 

 

Actualmente estamos recaudando fondos para comprar dos tubas. !El costo de una tuba nueva esta cerca de unos $15,000! Nos falta recaudar $3,000 más para completar nuestra meta original y esperamos alcanzarla en los próximos meses. Toledo Elementary

 

La Maestra de Música, Sarah Gibbs:

 

En este punto del año, estoy enseñando mediodía en la clase virtual a través de Zoom (donde los maestros desde sus casas están enseñando a través de sus pantallas con Zoom) y estoy enseñando mediodía en persona.

 

Mis estudiantes han mostrado un tremendo potencial de crecimiento este año. Empezando este año ellos están aprendiendo acerca de los principios de elementos rítmicos, como ta, ti-ti y media nota (ta-a). Los estudiantes han mantenido un ritmo estable y continúan aprendiendo las diferencias entre golpe y ritmo, creando instrumentos hechos en casa y aprendiendo Puntuaciones Gráficas donde otros estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de compartir su creatividad desde la primera parte del año. ¡Aun sin haber tenido clases de música el año pasado, yo los he visto crecer a pasos gigantes!

 

Actualmente, los estudiantes de cuarto a sexto grado están siendo introducidos al personal de la escuela, aprendiendo cómo leer páginas musicales y también Glockenspiel o Arpa de Regazo y aplicando su previo conocimiento de ta, ti-ti y media nota. Los estudiantes han hecho un excelente trabajo siguiendo los protocolos de COVID durante nuestro hora de tocar instrumentos y también han manteniendo nuestras expectativas de la clase de Cuidando a los demás, Aprender de sus errores, Todos los días haz lo mejor que puedas y Encuentra potencial no solo en otros… pero en ti mismo (CLEF por sus siglas).

 

Mis estudiantes de tercer grado también han tenido la oportunidad de tocar ritmo clave (kinder) o en Glockenspiel (1st-3rd). Estos estudiantes han tenido oportunidad de explorar sus instrumentos figurando cuales son los sonidos en diferentes claves que incluyen historias creadas por los propios estudiantes. ¡Tenemos todo tipo de personajes que participan en nuestras historias, incluyendo dragones, cangrejos danzantes, un Superhéroe Cerdito y hasta la Maestra Gibbs!

 

A través del resto del año, los estudiantes continuarán aplicando lo que han aprendido hasta ahora y usarlo para crear sus composiciones musicales y aprender notas e instrumentos musicales adicionales. Los estudiantes del sexto grado también tendrán la oportunidad de escuchar de la Maestra Elizabeth Soper de Toledo Jr./Sr. y aprender acerca de oportunidades que ellos tendrían si ellos escogen clase de música el año que viene. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Taft 7-12

 

La Maestra de Música, Collin Stegner:

¡La banda de música de la middle school está de regreso en Taft! La banda de música de la middle school empieza mañana y estamos preparados y listos para empezar música otra vez.

Empezando en 2 semanas la banda de jazz estará de regreso en persona una dia por semana.

Todos los demás grupos y clases están aprendiendo virtualmente y preparándose para otro showcase gracias a su determinación y perseverancia para crear música a través del aprendizaje virtual. 

Hemos comprado una nueva aplicación llamada SoundTrap. Esta aplicación nos permite grabar, producir y crear música por nuestra propia cuenta. Ha sido una excelente adición que permite a los estudiantes crear música individualmente y en grupo. 

 

Taft Elementary

La Maestra de Música, Gwendolyn Lahti:

Actualmente, los estudiantes están recibiendo dos lecciones de música creada por expertos cada semana diseñado por la misma Maestra Lahti. Estas lecciones están diseñadas para que los niños las puedan crear por sí mismos con direcciones integradas en cada dispositivo de audio. Las clases incluyen videos, historias, muchos ritmos y prácticas de ritmo. Las lecciones también enseñan conceptos básicos de música como clave, ritmo, alto y bajo (tono) y rápido y lento (tempo). Cada lección tiene preguntas integradas en ellas así los estudiantes pueden demostrar su aprendizaje a través de preguntas múltiples, escribiendo y dibujos. 

 

Waldport Middle y High School

Hemos planeado grabar y lanzar un video con mis estudiantes tocando un concierto en casa. Estamos planeando tocar el tercer movimiento de Canciones Folclóricas Inglesas compuestas por Ralph Vaughn Williams. 

Estoy continuando las clases como hora de club dos días por semanas en reuniones adicionales. ¡Espero que podamos poner en marcha el programa de la escuela intermedia nuevamente el próximo año escolar!

 

Crestview Heights Elementary School

 

El Maestro de Música, Michael Baker: 

 

El objetivo a largo plazo es dar a los estudiantes la habilidad de comprender y que se puedan mover libremente alrededor de las múltiples dimensiones musicales: melodía, ritmo, armonía, expresión e instrumentación. Los jóvenes estudiantes sienten la música en todo su ser y usan la música con deleite. Entonces aquí tenemos algunas herramientas para estimular sus entusiasmos y sus deleites. En mi diario horario en la clase yo uso juegos rítmicos para enseñar el ritmo, bufandas multicolor para enseñar formatos musicales, xilófonos para enseñar estructura musical y elementos expresivos y los jóvenes estudiantes crean algunos instrumentos rítmicos. He introducido a la clases un poco de los grandes clásicos de ballet y música clásica incidental (Nutcracker Suite, Peer Gynt, Peter, and the Wolf).
