Giving the Gift of Time

Deb Gaffney has been a part of the Lincoln County School District family since 1975. She describes Oceanlake as her “heart school”. After teaching there for 33 years, Deb returned as a dedicated volunteer. She says, “When I was teaching, I wanted someone to give me the gift of time. If I can save a teacher fifteen minutes, it’s time they can spend with a child.” Some of the teachers that Deb serves are her own former students.

Ms. Whitaker remembers fondly a field trip that Deb took her on for high achieving writers in the fourth grade describing it as a rich experience. Cheryl DenBleyker, Health & Records, praises Deb, “She walks on water here. She makes everyone feel special.” As Deb moves down the hall, she is greeted by the students, “Hey Mrs. G, how are you?”

Deb says, “I want everyone to know what a warm welcoming place it (Oceanlake) is for children and how much we appreciate people coming in and giving.” Deb is especially passionate about the school gardens and all the beautiful plants throughout the school. She encourages community members to join her in preparing the garden beds for the students to use this spring. “Volunteers need to know they don’t have to be here every day. Whatever time they have we can work around that.”

Dando el regalo del tiempo Deb Gafney ha sido parte de la familia del Distrito Escolar del Condado de Lincoln desde 1975. Ella describe a Oceanlake como su “escuela del corazón”. Deb está especialmente apasionada con los jardines escolares y todas las hermosas plantas en toda la escuela.
