Superintendent's Message

Tom RinearsonI'd like to welcome back our Lincoln County students for an exciting 2017-18 school year!

School starts next week, I’d like to remind all parents that registration is happening at all our schools. This year, we rolled out online registration for the entire district. It has not been as smooth as we wanted, and I would like to thank parents for their patience and help making it better. If you missed online registration, please come to your local school for assistance in getting your child enrolled.

We are still partnering with Mid-Columbia Bus Company for our bus riding students. Be prepared to be flexible during the first few weeks of school as our drivers get to know your students and the routes. Your child and the drivers will be working out the kinks of new schedules and you may experience delayed return and pick up times. We thank you for your patience and trust in getting your child to and from school safely. This year, all our LCSD schools are on the same calendar with Wednesday early release dates planned for teacher support.

Our 21st Century Afterschool programs and bus schedules will follow the calendar. This has been posted online and is at the school offices.

We are happy to share that the Community Eligibility Provision which provides free breakfast and lunch for every student is continuing for the school year.

Over the summer we have been mapping our plan for the school year which includes easing overcrowding in our classrooms. At Yaquina View Elementary, we have two new classrooms, and have hired additional elementary school teachers to decrease the class-sizes for our primary grades.

Our population is also changing with an increase of bi-lingual and ESL (English as a second language) students and we have bilingual tutors on board. Our students continue to show increases in achievement. We’ve hired two subject experts in Ocean Literacy who will be partnering with our educators and local businesses such Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon Coast Aquarium and Marine Discovery Tours, to ensure that we continue to excel in this field.

I will continue as the Interim Superintendent for this year and will be heavily engaged in the search for a new district superintendent. We are strategizing with the school board and our staff as to the recruitment and hiring process. We will hold public meetings to get feedback along the way.

Remember in these trying times to stand up for what’s right and kind and civil. We will continue to emphasize social and emotional growth for our students and strive to support our future – every child, every day. Sincerely, Tom Rinearson
